Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves to the side in a 'C' or 'S' shape. This can make a person's shoulders, hips or even ribs look uneven. For kids and teens, especially young girls, this isn't just a medical problem. It can really hurt their confidence and make them feel 'different' from their peers. Right now, doctors use a 'best guess' checklist to eyeball how uneven a patient's back is, giving scores like 0-4 for shoulders or 0-2 for hips, where the higher numbers show more unevenness. However, because every doctor sees things differently, these scores are more of an opinion than a precise measurement. To fix this problem, our team at BackSCNR, a local health startup created a 3D body-scanning tool. Think of it like a high-tech camera that scans and creates a digital map of a person's torso. Instead of guessing or making estimations, our tool gives doctors an exact 'symmetry score.' This tool helps doctors identify scoliosis early and lets families see exactly how treatment is working over time. BackSCNR has officially received the seal of approval from Health Canada as a registered health organization! This means that the government trusts our work and now we can bring our tool into clinics to help kids every day. Our goal is to make scoliosis checks more accurate, safer and less stressful. By giving families more clear facts about their children and teens, we hope to help them feel more confident and supported as they grow.
