Family violence is serious public health issue with negative health and mental health outcomes in mothers and children. The Primary Healthcare (PHC) sector is the most appropriate setting to identifying the risk and protective factors for family violence, given it is an entry point into the health system and a first, or only, point of contact for families over time with professionals who can facilitate access to specialist care and support. However, there is limited data on successful integration of sustainable, effective and system-wide family violence prevention in PHC practice. Therefore, the overall goal of this project is to support PHC settings in Alberta in developing an effective standardized response to family violence. Primary objectives of this study include: 1)To examine promising interventions for family violence assessment and prevention for implementation across healthcare settings; 2)To identify factors which promote or challenge the development of a response to family violence assessment and prevention within PHC; 3)To support implementation of family violence intervention programs in PHC with the development and pilot-testing of a PHC family violence evaluation tool unique to the Alberta context; and 4)To evaluate the tool's performance through follow-up evaluations at the pilot sites
