Research tells us that exercise in pregnancy can prevent conditions such as preeclampsia and diabetes. But most of this research is in uncomplicated pregnancies. When pregnant women develop complications such as high blood pressure or early labour, they are often told to avoid or be careful about exercise because we don't have research on exercise in these pregnancies. Even if exercise is not suggested, it is still important to move around and continue daily activities. Bed rest has not been shown to help pregnancies. Bed rest can also cause problems like blood clots, bone thinning and weak muscles. Bed rest also increases the chance of depression and anxiety. Health care providers (HCP) often give 'activity prescriptions' to people with complicated pregnancies. These 'activity prescriptions' can help pregnant people to get the right amount of activity for them. Our problem is that we don't have much research on physical activity prescriptions in complicated pregnancies. This study will help us to: 1) understand physical activity prescriptions 2) identify communication gaps between patients and HCP about physical activity advice 3) measure how active people with pregnancy complications are 4) understand how activity levels may affect mental health. Our goal is to be better at communicating and carrying out activity guidelines for complicated pregnancies.
