We will study whether income inequality, or the gap between high income and low income backgrounds, within schools have a detrimental effect on mental health of Canadian adolescents. Data will be used from the Cohort on Obesity, Marijuana use, Physical activity, Alcohol use, Smoking, and Sedentary behaviour (COMPASS), study. This nine-year study contains data (2012/13 to 2021/22) from a sample of over 65,000 students attending 120 secondary schools in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia. We will also identify the ways in which school income inequality leads to mental health conditions. This study will be one of the first to investigate the role of income inequality within schools on mental health outcomes among Canadian teens.
