Imaging bone health with menopause: Effects of hormone replacement therapy
Menopause is the result of reduced hormone levels in women starting at ~50 years of age. Widely known menopause symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats and poor sleep quality. Menopause also causes the bones to get weaker, leading to bone fractures. This damage does not cause symptoms so it is often not diagnosed. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is now being used to help reduce symptoms like hot flashes. The effects of HRT on bone health is not well understood. This study will use specialized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods to measure the changes in bone health with menopause. We expect to show that HRT can reduce this bone damage. We plan to provide information to doctors and women entering menopause about the potential positive effects of HRT.
