Children and adolescents with a history of cancer may need braces, but their teeth and jaws can be affected by cancer treatment. Some may have missing teeth, small teeth, short roots, weaker enamel, or changes in jaw growth. These issues can make orthodontic treatment more complicated and may also make extra X ray imaging less desirable. This project will develop an artificial intelligence tool to help orthodontists plan treatment for children and adolescents with a history of cancer. The tool will use records that are already commonly collected in orthodontic care, including mouth photographs, face photographs, panoramic dental X rays, intraoral scans, and information about the child’s cancer treatment. The goal is to help predict two important planning decisions: whether teeth may need to be removed as part of treatment, and what main types of dental movement may be needed. The project is designed to support safer, more consistent, and more radiation-conscious orthodontic care. It will not replace orthodontists. Instead, it will provide decision support that can help clinicians review complex cases more carefully. The study will also examine how much extra information advanced imaging adds when it is already taken for clinical reasons.
