Growing up while raising a child: Voices of Pakistani teenage moms and their mental health
Raising a child is difficult, but it's even harder when you're a teenager and figuring out your own life. This is the reality for many teenagers dealing with the challenges of being a mom. Teen pregnancy is a big health problem in many countries with millions of teenagers under 19 giving birth each year. In Pakistan, teen pregnancy is especially common. Being a mom as a teenager involves several life changes, such as becoming an adult, having a baby, and taking on new responsibilities. The challenges of teenage moms can have a grave impact on moms' bodies and mental health, which can, in turn, affect the health of babies. There is plenty of research on the physical effects of teen pregnancy; however, limited research is on the mental health needs of teen moms. I am interested in identifying difficulties teen moms in Pakistan face, especially related to their mental health, and finding ways to support them. I reviewed the literature that identified the need to understand the mental health challenges of teen moms in Pakistan. To achieve this goal, I will interview moms between 11-19 years in Pakistan to understand how the challenges affect their mental health. I'll observe how they live and interact in their communities. Also, I'll look at documents and things to see how culture influences their experiences. I will then develop suggestions to improve the mental health of teenage moms in Pakistan. The study will allow teen moms to talk about their experiences, and findings will aid our understanding of their problems and mental health needs. I hope to share outcomes with organizations, policymakers, and nurses working with young moms to help create positive change for them.
