Individuals with childhood stroke often experience neurological injury that manifests as lifelong neurobehavioural impairment. Executive functioning (EF) is an important aspect of cognitive development and is reflected in a child's performance on tasks that engage abilities such as inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and working memory. EF is predictive of functional life outcomes across many domains, of which include social and cognitive development, and behavioural, emotional, and mental health. EF is poorly understood in the childhood stroke population, and particularly in those with perinatal stroke (which occurs during pregnancy or within the first month after birth). Furthermore, little is known about the psychosocial impact of caring for a child with perinatal stroke, although it is indicated that raising a child with neurological conditions may place the caregiver at a greater risk for psychological health concerns. The goal of this research project is to elucidate the EF profile and functional outcomes in children with perinatal stroke, as well as the psychosocial impact of caring for individuals in this population. The data gathered will provide a better understanding for patients and families, as well as enable clinicians to more accurately identify areas of possible concern and guide treatment to most effectively address underlying deficits to maximize health outcomes.
