Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormone disorder affecting up to 15% of females. Those with PCOS have increased risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, mental illness and pregnancy complications. Our data shows obesity and diabetes occur at a 3-4-fold higher rate in those with PCOS in Alberta, and this incurs a high-economic healthcare and decreased quality of life burden. In our recent health and health-care survey we found PCOS patients have major concerns about their body weight and risk of diabetes, and they face barriers to care in the healthcare system. Aim and Objectives: Our overall goal is to improve the health and healthcare of those affected by PCOS. The aim of this project is to partner with women with PCOS and healthcare providers to understand their healthcare needs and experiences, and translate these findings in development of a Pathway to Care model for those affected by PCOS in Alberta. The objectives of this project are; i) To determine the patient and healthcare provider experience and perspective on the healthcare needs and current barriers in the healthcare system. We will engage patient partners and healthcare providers in focus groups to gain insight into the healthcare system experience and challenges for those affected by PCOS. ii) To work with stakeholders to develop a Pathway to Care model for those affected by PCOS. We will translate findings of our healthcare survey and focus group work to collaborate with patients, healthcare providers and Alberta Health Services to develop a Pathway to Care model to address improvements in health and healthcare in those affected by PCOS. Our Team: Our PCOS Together team are global and Canadian leaders in health research, advocacy and community outreach in PCOS. Significance and Expected Outcomes: This project is a much needed step in addressing the high prevalence of adverse health outcomes including obesity and diabetes in those affected by PCOS.
