Funding outcome

The reasons children attend primary care-based appointments with their general pediatricians and allied health care professionals are diverse, leading to a range of preventive interventions and therapeutic services. Given this breadth, primary care is an ideal venue to learn about stakeholders' most pressing health issues and questions. The purpose of our research is to solicit input and rank priorities for medical and health related questions considered to be the most important by a diverse mix of parents (n~100) and front-line clinicians (pediatricians, nurses, allied health professionals; n~25) at the Northeast Community Health Centre (NECHC). Stakeholders' input and priorities will be collected using the James Lind Alliance approach. This step-by-step, group-based process includes a priority setting partnership, where stakeholders are active, integral partners in the research process. This approach integrates several research stages and methods (online surveys, focus groups) to rank the most important topics and will inform future patient-oriented research at the NECHC. The data we collect will be used subsequently to develop research funding proposals for conducting pediatric- and family oriented primary care-based research at the NECHC. This clinic provides health services for a substantial proportion of new Canadians from immigrant and refugee backgrounds as well as lower income families. Given the sociodemographic characteristics of families living in northeast Edmonton, their health needs and priorities are likely to differ from their peers in other communities. Our research is a critical step to develop a long-term plan to conduct practice-based and patient-oriented research to meet the interests and priorities of families and health care providers in northeast Edmonton.
