Many children in Canada and across the world have problems affecting their intestinal tract. This is known as inflammatory bowel disease. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are the two kinds of inflammatory bowel disease. The cause of this problem in the intestine is not known, but bacteria likely play a role. The immune system is important for fighting infections, but in the intestine it is also important to know which bacteria are good and which bacteria are bad. When the immune system thinks all bacteria are bad it causes the problems that leads to inflammatory bowel disease. This scientific study will use a microscope to find different types of cells in the immune system and bacteria near those cells. We hope to find different bacteria and immune cells in intestine that is inflamed when we compare it too intestine that is not inflamed. We may be able to use this information to decide which medications will work for children with inflammatory bowel disease. It might also lead to new experiments and new treatments for children.
