In my role as nurse research coordinator for the Edmonton Pediatric Scoliosis Research Group, I am involved in a variety of research projects regarding children with spinal deformities. I am currently involved in a qualitative study with the Faculty of Nursing looking at understanding the stories young children have to tell of undergoing multiple scoliosis surgeries. Our group collaborates with the Faculty of Engineering as well as the Faculty of Rehab Medicine and have a number of studies related to the treatment of scoliosis, all aimed at improving outcomes and quality of life for our patient population. Our current studies focus on the use of ultrasound as a tool for assessing scoliosis severity, bracing options and the use of exercise programs for conservative treatment, and understanding nerve injuries from pressure for patients receiving surgery. In my role as coordinator, I work with our surgeons, nurse practitioner, and clinic staff with a focus on the integration of research into all areas of care, most specifically with our Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis population.
