Summary of research:
I recently completed a Masters degree in which my thesis topic explored the experiences of family physicians who practice obstetrics in groups in Edmonton and the experiences of family medicine residents who work with these physicians in core rotations. The satisfaction of these family physicians was investigated, the reasons for choosing group systems of obstetrical care, and their perceptions of teaching. The perceptions of family medicine residents in this core rotation were examined as well in terms of satisfaction/quality of learning obstetrics from family physicians, experiences on this core rotation, and perceptions of practicing obstetrics as future family physicians given their clinical experiences and witnessing group systems of obstetrical care. I plan to extend this research by investigating different models of primary care obstetrics in urban, rural, and northern/Aboriginal settings across Canada. In addition, I plan to investigate how learners may be incorporated into these practice settings, and examine their perspectives. I also plan to investigate the satisfaction and quality of care of patients in these various obstetrical models.
