Summary of research:
Philomina is a full professor in the Women's Studies Program at the University of Alberta. She has two major research areas: 1) Gender and African International Migration, 2) Gender and Education in Africa. Her research on African Immigrants in Canada focuses on the experiences of women and their families. With her familiarity into the lives of these groups as an African immigrant herself, she has been able to go beyond the usual focus on employment, housing and education, exposing the underlying issues of health and wellbeing crucial to integration. Dr. Okeke has also been carrying out research on Gender and tertiary Education in African. Recent efforts to rebuild Africa's higher education also ushered in an era of increasing social responsibility towards expanding African women's profile. Dr. Okeke has received a Rotary Foundations International Teachers Award (2003). She is an external reviewer/evaluator for the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) for Standard Application Grants. She also reviews the Gender and the Allocation of Research Funding in Africa (The MacArthur Foundation Forum- Working group on Strategic Planning for funding research in Africa)
