Summary of research:
Research that I have most recently been involved in that relates to the WCHRI mission includes: 1) research about the experience of PICU staff, and the reflections they have shared about the many challenges they experience in their workplace environment, including moral distress arising from ethical issues that arise in the midst of caring for their patients. We have created a film to help PICU professionals recognize potential situations in which moral distress can arise and help them develop strategies to identify and mitigate, or resolve it. Through strategic dissemination of this work we hope to support PICU staff in finding their way through a morally plural environment while continuing to work towards a common goal - the benefit of PICU patients and their families; 2) research in which we are inviting 3rd year clerkship students in their pediatrics rotations to talk about, and explore personal, emotional, and spiritual meaning in mainstream medical culture as they reflect on their patient encounters with the aim of helping them to develop their own inner resources for addressing the suffering of others. In addition, an overriding theme of my work has focused on professional identity formation across medical careers.
