Theranostics is a new emerging precision medicine approach that combines diagnostic imaging with a molecular probe for the purpose of understanding pathology in a biological system. A "positive" signal is helpful to inform patients of whether a treatment paradigm is likely to have impact. The therapeutic approach in theranostics most often employs the same treatment used in the initial diagnostics. The approach is most developed in Oncology however, my research group's approach uses non-invasive EEG imaging technology in Psychiatry with natural product probes that are alternatives to opiates, hypnotics and benzodiazepines for treatment of pain, sleep and anxiety problems. A clinical trial is planned for 2019 using natural products. In this clinical trial, neuroplasticity changes with be measured with neuroimaging techniques and neurostimulation with transcranial magnetic stimulation. The effects on cognition will be measured.
