Anesthetic impact on children with external ventricular assist devices is poorly understood. I have produced retrospective work on the impact of different anesthetic techniques on children with the Berlin Heart Excor ventricular assist device. This is the first published work in this area. In the area of sleep disturbed breathing and anesthesia in children with Dr. El-Hakim we have investigated the risk factors for post operative complications, so identifying which children need to stay in Hospital after procedures. We have identified the excess risk obesity adds to this risk. We have demonstrated the incidence of different pathology in children and neonates with sleep disturbed breathing. Currently I have helped put together a sedation analgesia and withdrawal study group in the Pediatric intensive care unit at the Stollery. There are many deficits in the knowledge around best sedation practice in intensive care and we are building a research team to address some of the more pressing concerns.
