Our research is focused on three main goals, 1. Generating a basic understanding of the mechanisms by which the immune system can become tolerant of some molecules (e.g. self molecules/tissues) while at the same time responding to others (e.g. pathogenic microbes, donor organ and tissue transplants etc.). 2. Determining the mechanistic basis for failures in self-tolerance leading to autoimmune diseases such as type-1 diabetes. 3. Devising ways to induce tolerance to donor islet transplants in order to generate a clinical islet transplant protocol for the treatment of type-1 diabetes that does not require continuous immunosuppressive therapy of the patient.
