I am interested in how technologies for communication, manipulation and mobility can provide assistance to children who have severe disabilities. I am interested both in how the technologies can enable greater motor, language and cognitive function and how the technologies can help the children reveal their understanding of the world. I use a variety of robots including educational robots, Lego MindStorms robots and the development of a robot specifically designed for use by children who have disabilities. Control is via arrays of switches and/or augmentative communication devices. I am particularly interested in how technologies can be designed to be meaningful to children for engagement in play as well as in meeting academic goals. I work with children in my lab in Corbett Hall, at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and in schools throughout the Edmonton area. I have collaborations in the US, Portugal, Australia and Taiwan.
