Summary of research:
Our division is involved in many research projects which target pediatric population. The main goal of my research is to improve outcome for children via health research. Currently, I am involved as a co-investigator in a Phase 3, Dose-Escalating Study in Children With Hyperkalaemia to Evaluate Increasing Doses of Sodium Zirconium Cyclosilicate (SZC) given Three Times Daily for the Correction of Hyperkalaemia and the effectiveness of the same dose of SZC given once Daily to maintain normokalaemia among those requiring continuous treatment. The study is approved by REB already. Patient recruitment will be started in the near future. SZC is a new medication which binds to potassium the tragert population is chronic kidney disease (CKD) children. This study will help us to determine if this medication can be approved for children. When approved, I would anticipate a significant change in life of children with CKD. As there is lack of potassium binder options for CKD population. Furthermore, I am in the process of writing a research proposal about the incidence of Clostridium difficile infection in solid organ transplant. I will be the primary investigator of this project. This study will be collaboration between our division and pediatric gastroenterology – Dr. Turner. It will be a retrospective study which uses the data from electronic system such as OTTR. In addition, we will try to determine some risk factors for Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) in such a population. The incidence of CDI in such a population is not known especially in children.
